Women: Find Your Balance and Passion
During life’s biggest physical and emotional changes — perimenopause, postpartum phases, and menopause — women’s reproductive hormones can become imbalanced. This is when lots of women first experience low sex drive, fatigue, insomnia, hot flashes, mood swings, weight gain, and even digestive issues, all common symptoms of fluctuating hormones. These sensations can make you feel like a stranger in your own body — which affects your sexual self too, because when you don’t feel well, your interest in sex may dwindle. That’s why, for many women, feeling better physically is the first step to improving libido.
When we look at the physical causes of low libido, it’s apparent that most fall under the umbrella of hormonal imbalance. Low libido is commonly accompanied by other symptoms of hormonal imbalance — insomnia, fatigue, night sweats, vaginal dryness, fuzzy thinking. These symptoms can make daily life miserable and can also affect how you perceive yourself. Some women say their symptoms make them feel “old and used up,” as if they’re losing their womanhood. In other words: not very sexy.
Yet, some perimenopausal and menopausal women say they are enjoying the “best sex of their lives.” With menopause we’re free of the fear of pregnancy, though women should use some form of birth control until they’ve gone a full year without periods, and practicing safe sex is a necessity. With this new sense of freedom, good sex, even great sex, is a real possibility for all women at midlife and beyond.
However, complaints still abound from both men and women about the lack of sex drive a hormone imbalance can create. When you compound that with the pain that sometimes accompanies the act, many women will do anything to avoid it. It’s not like you can blame them. However sex and intimacy with your partner is a vital part of a healthy relationship and not something you should miss.

Tips: Living With Low Sex Drive
You can take steps to make your sex life more enjoyable. For enhancing sexual satisfaction:
- Try Kegal exercises, which can enhance sexual gratification. These exercises strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. You do them by tightening and then relaxing the pelvic floor muscles (it’s as if you are starting and stopping the flow of urine). Kegal exercises can improve sensation during sex and also can decrease urinary incontinence (many cases of incontinence are linked to weakened muscles).
- Increase the time spent on foreplay before engaging in intercourse. This will not only help you discover each other’s bodies, but will allow more time for your body’s natural lubrication to occur.
- Exercise regularly. Becoming physically fit will not only improve your self-esteem, but increased blood flow to the vagina can also stimulate your sex drive.

Ingredients * 1 pint fresh strawberries, washed and patted dry, stems intact, and thoroughly air-dried < |
Preparation:
Prepare ahead: Wrap pieces of Styrofoam in plastic wrap for fruit to rest upon and catch drips. Feel free to substitute orange sections (with the membrane left on) or dried plums for the strawberries.
Pour about 1 inch of water into bottom of a double-boiler and heat to hot but not simmering. Melt chocolate and shortening in top of double-boiler, stirring occasionally until completely melted and smooth. Remove top pot and place on a heat-safe trivet. Let cool for about 5 minutes.
While chocolate cools a bit, carefully spear strawberries with toothpicks. Working quickly, swirl each strawberry gently in the chocolate about halfway up the strawberries and place inverted on toothpicks into the Styrofoam to cool and harden. When done, place in refrigerator to further set chocolate shell.
When completely hardened, use a syringe to carefully inject a bit of the Grand Marnier liquor into the center of each strawberry, being careful not to over-fill. Chocolate drippings can be stripped from plastic wrap and re-melted or retained for other uses.
